Approach Life As A Blank Slate

Approach Life as a Blank Slate

Being open to the possibility of re-creating yourself is the first step to making conscious changes and choices that will grant you the power to do what you never thought possible.

It is only natural to resist abandoning your old way of seeing and acting in the world. If you let go of your beliefs and your former sense of self, you have to approach life as a blank slate. You must admit any knowledge you have is momentary. And that is all right.

All the thoughts and concepts that have offered you a feeling of being safe and  secure, like you know how to navigate this world, will have to die for you to experience the evolution of Self.

Most of us would love if our difficult decisions were made for us. However, if you are receiving inner guidance you will feel a quickening and with it a sense of excitement, a passion.  Ask yourself if you feel enlivened by the prospect of a change in your life. If it’s right for you – you will feel energized. Remember this is your choice and it should excite you. Try not to bring fear into the mix, any choice made in fear, will be the wrong choice.

Jung once said, “Find out what a person fears most, and that is where he will develop next.” Move through fear, have faith in your intuition. Expect some resistance and then move through it.

Off With The Mask

Off with the mask

Our culture does a great job of projecting onto us how to think and act. Break that dependency. James Baldwin wrote, “Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without, and know we cannot live within.” When we are wearing our mask we do so to fit in, to be accepted. What we miss is intimacy, the freedom to share what we feel in our heart.

Author Zora Neale Hurston adds, “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” The soul wants to experience everything, to expand beyond the borders we create for ourselves. When we let the mind wander unsupervised, it can lead us down a path to feeling inferior and unworthy. We allow the Saboteur archetype to restrict our dreams and longings, which also deprives the soul of freedom. The result is self- loathing, disappointment, or boredom which can lead to depression.

As long as you are challenging yourself, taking risks, growing and creating, you will find you are renewed, realized, and regenerated. You discover that you are powerful and you begin to love yourself. You are acting from the deepest part of psyche and your soul. In reaching for your untapped potential you alien your ego with the soul. This is a gift to Self as well as to those we are in relationship with, our community, and the world.

Recreating yourself requires reprograming the subconscious, as well as delving into the unconscious. You may not realize that the subtle actions you take today, are the reactions that have been with you from early childhood. We learn to protect ourselves during our formative years and we continue to shelter our vulnerable self throughout our life. If changing those habits and perceptions sounds like an insurmountable task, it’s because you have ignored looking inward for too long. The shadow archetype of the Saboteur is hard at work keeping you from your potential. Instead choose the archetypal energy of the Explorer, Engineer, Visionary, Strategist, Student, Seeker or the Lover.

You may think you are as good as it gets, but wait a minute. You aren’t even close to understanding and using all your gifts! The unconscious mind is a reservoir of everything you have experienced or thought. It is a hidden treasure chest of information awaiting your attention. Your fears, expectations, gifts, and wisdom are just waiting for you to explore them. Tap into that unrealized potential.

The ways into the unconscious include relaxation, imagery, dreamwork, inner dialogue, and journaling. Make the time. You are worth exploring. The unconscious is filled with riches. You are an encyclopedia waiting to be read.

Is It Possible To Recreate Yourself

Is it Possible to Recreate Yourself?

As a liberator and change agent at heart, my writing tends to encourage creativity and growth within the Self. I believe that it’s healthy and necessary to recreate yourself every seven to ten years, or even on a daily basis. We tend to carry forth our beliefs and habitual thinking as a safety net. Instead, it inhibits our thinking-creative mind, which is our conscious mind.

As a species, we think we’ve achieved a lot. We’ve skyrocketed to the Moon. We’ve made amazing achievements in science and technology. We still have yet to fully explore the borders of our human magnitude.

The fast-paced nature of the Western world does not value inner-work. Most contemporary Americans neglect, if not ignore, the true value of a meditation practice. They do not embark on the natural process of individuation, or have a holistic understanding of themselves.  Our culture places more import on financial capital and materiality security, which can be taken away or disappear in a minute, when the cultivation of inner spiritual guidance helps you handle anything that comes your way with a sense of integrity and grace. Engaging with your unconscious – leads you to true maturity.

In the book “Higher Creativity – Liberating the Unconscious for Breakthrough Insights” the authors, Harman and Rheingold, encourage us to break the mold.

“Among the deep unconscious beliefs everybody holds, are beliefs about human potentialities and limitations – one’s own, and other people’s. These limits tend to be confirmed by experience, not because they are true, but because they are believed. History has shown, time and time again, that popular opinion about human limits can change, and that human limits themselves can change drastically.”

What limits are you putting on your life? What deeply engrained beliefs do you have about what you can, and cannot do? To experience breakthroughs in your life, it helps to understand that it is possible to reprogram your belief systems.

We’re in trouble – make no mistake!

250257e6db164f99a6c188f0beda83e7Make no mistake. We are in trouble.

Media matters, but journalism is dead – and what’s left is an attempt at entertainment. The race for ratings is ludicrous at best. If you’re still paying attention, you’d see we are being overwhelmed with lies and insults from bullies and cowards and what Moore and Gillette, the authors of King, Warrior, Magician and Lover, identify as “high chair tyrants.” Our current leaders are marked by arrogance, hubris, hate, childishness, and pathological narcissism. These are the politicians running for the office of president.

What we can do about it all – Just ask the Pope

“Don’t forget to pray for me.” – Pope Francis

U.S. President Barack Obama talks to Pope Francis during their meeting at the Vatican

Pope Francis’s visit to America last week renewed my hope. Actually, that’s an understatement.

I couldn’t pull myself away from his words. His deep understanding of our history, our cultural, political, and societal perplexities are impressive.

Above and beyond all, I was energized by his ability to point out our human defects – our shortcomings – while offering specific guidance to those who have ears to hear. He is thorough and gentle. His words are inspiring. Pope Francis is a soul on a mission. He represents not only the Catholic Church, but the whole of humanity. He’s inclusive, non-judgmental, and humble – both a teacher and a disciple.

After the Storm…

Large_IMG_6552Something happened in my life a few months ago.

It’s why I haven’t been writing. It was the result of a feeling. Nothing seemed right for days. Something pulled at me. I was irritated with everything, nothing satisfied me — and I’m usually easy with life.

I came to a complete stop.

To Live Simply

EYE 1-2015 NEWSLETTER -2Truth is simple, unadorned, direct, and uncomplicated.

Traveling by air this holiday season brought me down. People looked depressed.

Young people, who are prone to exhibit an energetic hopefulness – due to vitality, due to faith in dreams – their faces matched those of the elderly. The people in transit appeared to be living a comatose, trampling over my feet, connected to one thing for life support – their iPhones.

Take Courage Because Human Nature is Divine

Have you ever been in the company of a person who is a fierce warrior and at the same time a peacemaker? Imagine a group of people acting as instruments of compassion and justice. I recently witnessed this in Montgomery, AL of all places.

“Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” – Robert Kennedy

Create More Love and Peace in the World

unnamed-3Does it seem like the whole world is out of control? Or should I say, is the human population teetering on the brink of insanity?

If we watch the broadcasts, we see violence and upheaval everywhere – a sure sign something is wrong.  Humanity is in pain. The love of power is stronger than the power of love. Our children’s lives are at stake.

Drop Your Emotional Baggage

Emotional freedom doesn’t suggest you are suddenly free of feeling. Emotions are designed to call your attention to what is happening within you and around you, so you respond in an appropriate way.

We All Have an Epic Tale!

I love this quote by Eckhart Tolle. Let’s examine the meaning behind his words.

“Nobody can tell you who you are. It would just be another concept, so it would not change you. Who you are requires no belief. In fact, every belief is an obstacle. It does not even require your realization, since you already are who you are. But without realization, who you are does not shine forth into this world.”

On Getting Real…

unnamedJames Baldwin wrote, “Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.”

Author Zora Neale Hurston adds, “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” The truth is we hide from our shadow parts, and even more from our brilliant, godlike qualities.

So what do you hide from?

You wear a mask that reflects who you unconsciously believe you are. You carry on bravely, answering the question “how are you” with “I’m good” or “I’m fine”.  Sure you are, but what parts of the self are you hiding from?

Is it Possible to Recreate Yourself?

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 1.34.12 PMDressing up on Halloween doesn’t count. It’s true. You’ve adopted societal limits on your creativity, your resilience, and the ability to recreate yourself. You have untapped potential. You can improve and expand your body, mind, and spirit.

As a species, we think we’ve achieved a lot. We’ve skyrocketed to the Moon. We’ve made amazing achievements in science and technology. We still have yet to fully explore the borders of our human magnitude.

Is There Enough Intimacy in Your Life?

Is There Enough Intimacy in Your Life | Into the Tangled Garden

Plato said, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” Think about that.

The intimacy we so desire can be blocked by our own refusal to share or find humor in our lives. We miss the opportunity to play, learn, share and laugh together. In general, most conversations tend to be generic and rather superficial. We walk away having learned nothing more that what we already know without even beginning to explore another’s world. One Mother

A single rose at Into the Tangled GardenMother’s day touches everyone in some way. We are born of one mother, unlike any other. As our mother and our lifeline, she nurtured and cared for us. She is our first love and one we never get over, because later, she often proves to be our first heartbreak.

In the beginning, her warm embrace gave us a sense of security. We had a felt sense that we needed her and she needed us. Later, as we became conscious of our separateness, initially a shock – we may have cried as we adjusted to the sense of free floating. Still, long into our adulthood, we look to her and yearn for her approval.

Understanding and Misunderstanding Go Hand in Hand

Into the Tangled Garden - Family RelationshipsI recently celebrated the passing of a friend’s mother at a beautiful ceremony honoring her life journey and contributions to this world. My friend’s family was at the service – each member in a different phase of their life, all having gone through their personal dramas and feuds with one another. Despite the conflict and tension, however, they gathered to pay tribute.

Fate so often hands us more than we can make sense of. We often stumble through life, trying to adapt and react the best we can without fully understanding a situation’s significance until after the fact. We discover ourselves through our relationships and stumbles with others. Relationships with family can serve as our biggest teachers. Sometimes these relationships are fun. At other times they are messy and complex.

A Tangled Mess or A Mass of Harmony

A Tangled Mess or A Mass of HarmonyThe phrase Into the Tangled Garden is a metaphor that symbolizes our lives as human beings, a garden made of 50 trillion cells.

Deepak Chopra, M.D., a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, tells us, “these cells do about 6 trillion things a second, and each cell instantly knows what the other cell is doing. All the while, we follow the patterns of the stars, play the piano and make a baby at the same time.”

Wondrous Love

Wondrous Love | Into the Tangled GardenFebruary is the month of Eros energy. It’s cold outside, and we need fire to keep us going. So let’s talk about love, passion, and ecstasy. As humans, our ultimate desire is to love and be loved. We want that love to be unconditional, and this is possible…but first we have to get over our preconceived notions of what a relationship is.

Love is never what we expect in the beginning of our search because so many of us don’t understand what we are looking for. It starts with a longing, a feeling of emptiness that yearns to be filled. We mistakenly believe another will make us happy and whole.

The 7 Chakras

VITAL ENERGYChakras are our energy centers. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura. Their function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. They are associated with our physical, mental and emotional interactions.

The seven chakras guide our spirit, our vital life force, our prana, our chi. Each ascending chakra connects to a major organ in the body. Each chakra influences patterns in our psychology.

You can’t see. They are working behind the scene.

The Magician Archetype

Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 2.16.25 PMLike every other archetype, the magician can appear in the psyche of both men and women, despite our tendency to characterize forms of behavior as either masculine or feminine. Remember we have access to Yin and Yang, anima or animus, within our reach. Honoring both is what makes us complete.

To represent the Magician, I choose an image from the 2000 movie, Chocolat.  The film tells the beautiful story of a single woman Vianne ( played by Juliette Binoche), who energizes an otherwise stuffy town with her irresistible chocolate creations.

The Holy Fool

The Holy Fools

There is a Fool in all of us. Perhaps it only comes out once a year on our birthday or once a lifetime. For others the way of the fool is a path, a lifestyle – and lucky for them. Given this is April 1st, All Fools’ Day, I want to honor the archetype of the Holy Fool.

The Holy Fool won’t trick someone for the fun of it. He or she instead lives a simplified life, not simple minded, but joyful and observant. They don’t take themselves too seriously and aren’t interested in calling attention to others shortcomings. Rather they exercise a wisdom different from conventional and mainstream ways of thinking. They overstep what is considered politically correct to remove our defenses leaving us vulnerable yet feeling safe.

Warrior Archetype

warrior-archetype-150x150Do you have a strong sense of justice, loyalty, and a willingness to defend what you see as just and right? Are you goal oriented, know what you want, and how to get it? Do you have the patience to stay with a task until the end? Do you have the ability to see problems with clarity, to strategize, and use tactical means to overcome them? Are you motivated by the belief that strength and power can be used to defeat whatever threatens freedom or any injustice?

Meet Your Pirate Archetype

pirateDSC_4201Initially, when we are magnetically attracted to a person or a thing, it arouses a quality that is already within us. We may be able to identify the source of our attraction, the characteristics that person or object possesses which we identify with (or have denied within ourself).

However, this phenomenon often happens on unconscious level, where it goes unnoticed.

Take Johnny Depp, for example. What do we love about him? Is it a facet of Self you associate with or reject? Personally, my risk taking, rebellious, and fantasy femme fatal parts are attracted to Johnny Depp…right…we all know why we’re attracted to this superstar. Let’s examine his portrayal of pirate Jack Sparrow.

Relationships As A Gateway to Self

RELATIONSHIPS xs4f7e8b3a1-150x150

Before the acquiring the awareness that we are all responsible for ourselves, we look outside for “the one” who can fill our empty parts, this longing we have for wholeness.  Until we realize no one person or thing can make us happy if we’re not, we continue to fantasize about the ideal lover, partner, or friend. When we search for a relationship, we are still a nebula, indistinct in our Self, unaware of our own luminous matter. We’re in a comparison stage, looking outside the Self for completion, validation, and unconditional love.

We often start by looking for what we feel is incomplete within us. That part we just can’t seem to find or fill. This could be a personality trait, a denied experience which left a gaping hole in the soul. Or it could stem from the desire to feel united with a higher power, a feeling of connectedness. If we find any of these qualities in another person, even for a moment, we seem to cling to them, believing we’re incomplete without them. (more…)

Facing Transformational Challenges: An Initiation

transformational-chllenges-150x150Movement to a higher level of consciousness is like any initiation. It can be unsettling because once again you’ve realized you don’t know everything.

This time may seem like a mere disruption, an uncomfortable situation forcing you to either crumble or evolve. Taken to the next level, an initiation can become the dark night of the soul. We will feel crazy, lost, overwhelmed, and even angry during the start of a transformational period. Welcome these feelings. They are meant to deliver you joyfully to the next stage of your life.

To Get Beyond Fear, Simply Accept Fear.

Get beyond fearFear is built into our DNA. It most likely saved lives when we were cave dwellers, when wandering out meant life or death. It was a message that urged caution. The fight or flight response is something we are all familiar with. When those two don’t work, we head into paralyzing fear.

The reaction to fear is determined by the intensity and the resulting fearful thoughts. There are four reactions: anger, anxiety, guilt and depression. The symptoms can arise from real or imagined triggers.

Get Recharged, Empowered and Make a Difference.

recharge“If you wish to diminish fear in the world, diminish your own. These are the gifts you can give.” -Gary Zukav

It doesn’t come easy but worth working at!

Until we feel comfortable WITHIN our self we look at everything outside our self for solutions. It doesn’t occur to us that the solution lies within.

world eyeTo speak the truth, to be transparent, to accept the consequences of acting with integrity or not acting with integrity.

To be in tune with the world trying to heal itself we must be in tune with what is going on internally in our own lives. We are witnessing an upheaval, a revolt, a revolution across the middle east and here at home in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, and others. There is solidarity of purpose on both sides. We should understand that their must be changes, we can’t go backwards. Nature isn’t like that ~ it continually evolves, self corrects.  We must have the courage and will to try what hasn’t been tried before. To take action knowing that it will not be perfect, but it will development into something workable.
